It’s beginning to feel a lot like…nothing…

I have no holiday spirit.  It is the beginning of December, it has finally gotten a little chilly here in Saudi, and yet I feel no desire to decorate or prepare for Christmas.  We will be traveling for the holiday, going to Dublin to spend 10 days with family, and though I am excited about that trip, I just can’t seem to get excited for Christmas.  I don’t know if it because there is no Christmas here (no carols, no decorations, no acknowledgement at all in public spaces) or because I’m just a grump, but I can’t even wrap my head around the idea of decorating.  The thought of pulling out the tree and all the other trimmings leaves me cold even though the thought of not doing those things also leaves me cold.

Sigh…

I'm not feeling much on decorating either...but I can't imagine being in a place that isn't celebrating Christmas at all....

have a good time with your family though!

So maybe you don't need to decorate this year, or maybe you're just not ready. Perhaps just bring out one or two things that are particularly meaningful to you, and not worry about the tree this year. (I did that for a couple of years.)

Perhaps just concentrate on the upcoming trip to Dublin, and let the other pieces fall into place in their own time and in their own way.

Nobody explains this to us as we're growing up, but there are really no rules about decorating or not decorating for Christmas just as there are no rules about how one celebrates the day itself. That can be a rather freeing thought.

This turned into a dissertation when it was just supposed to be a little comment to say "be all right, be fine" as my grandmother used to say. And it will. Whatever you do.

I'm sure Dublin will feel Christmasy. How cold is cold in Saudi?

Sometimes minimal is the way to go. I am almost feeling downright anti-Christmasy at times.
